Damian Drum encourages residents to get the annual flu vaccination
Federal Member for Murray Damian Drum MP, has reminded residents across the Murray electorate of the importance of getting a flu vaccination – visiting the Mooroopna Pharmacy today.
Mr Drum says having his flu shot at the Mooroopna Pharmacy highlighted the value of these local services within the community. “This demonstrates how easy it is for anyone to get their flu shot with trained community pharmacists who are able to directly administer the vaccine. What this means is that anyone can come to a pharmacy which provides this service and ensure they are protected against this year’s flu strain.”
Mr Drum said this was particularly important for pregnant women and the elderly in the community. “The availability of this vaccination by pharmacists assists the community’s access to protection against the flu. Flu viruses are constantly changing, and vaccines may be updated each year to protect against the most recent and common strains”, he said.
Mooroopna Pharmacy Proprietor Linh Ngoc Nguyen said that having pharmacists deliver vaccinations was a huge benefit for consumers. “In the short time that community pharmacists have been allowed to administer the vaccine there has been a high percentage of people being vaccinated for the first time,” he said. “The convenience, affordability and ease of access to pharmacy flu vaccinations means more people are getting protect against this disease.”
Mr Nguyen said that consumers could be confident about getting their flu shots in a pharmacy as pharmacists giving the shot had to undergo special training. “This ensures we have the knowledge and skills to both deliver the vaccine safely and effectively, as well as being able to identify and treat any possible side effects.”
