Councils in Murray urged to apply for bridge funding

Member for Murray, Damian Drum MP, is encouraging councils in the Murray electorate to improve the state of their local bridges with the help of funding from the Federal Government.

Applications for funding under Round Three of the $360 million Bridges Renewal Programme are now open.

‘This is a great opportunity for state and local governments to apply for funding to have ageing bridges fixed, with up to half the cost met by the Federal Government,’ Mr Drum said.

‘I encourage the Strathbogie Shire, Greater Shepparton City, Moira Shire, Loddon Shire and Campaspe Shire councils to nominate local bridges that need upgrading or replacing,’ he said.

'Murray residents who would like their local bridge upgraded are encouraged to get in touch with their council to see if they are nominating their local bridge for an upgrade.’

The Bridges Renewal Programme assists councils in tackling larger infrastructure projects, which the councils may not be able to fund themselves.

Under Rounds 1 and 2 of the funding, six bridges in the Murray electorate received upgrade funding:

Australian Government Contribution

Total Spend

Cullens Road Bridge Replacement

Curries Road Bridge Upgrade

Nelsons Road Bridge Upgrade

Kellys Bridge Upgrade

Kirwans Bridge Upgrade

Kyabram-Rochester Road Bridge

‘Since Bridges Renewal started in 2014-15, around $211 million has been invested in 204 projects across the nation,’ Mr Drum said.

Nominated projects will go through a competitive merit-based selection process, with successful applicants eligible to receive up to 50 per cent of project costs, or $5 million.

Proponents should discuss priorities with their local communities, industry stakeholders, Regional Development Australia committees and relevant government road agencies early in the process of compiling their proposals.

Round Three is now open, with applications closing on 15 May 2017.

Guidelines and proposal forms are now available on the Bridges Renewal Programme website at: www.infrastructure.gov.au/bridges
