Drum calls on Government to fund more standpipes

Monday, December 21, 2015

Nationals MP for Northern Victoria has called on the State Government to urgently fund more water standpipes across the regions as the drought bites deeper into rural communities.

“There are increasing reports of traffic congestion and lengthy delays at the standpipes as more and more property owners lose their regular supplies,” Mr Drum said.

“Across the north and west of the state, most small land owners are experiencing rapidly drying dams and no rainwater tank refills.

“Some water authorities report they are re-opening standpipes which had been shut down since the Millennium drought.

“This has meant a huge demand at standpipes. Water authorities have had to develop traffic management plans to cope with the congestion of small tankers and trailers at the access points.”

Mr Drum said immediately funding more standpipes would be an effective drought response by the Government, which until now had been slow off the mark in recognising the severity of the drought and getting assistance in place.
