Drum welcomes Federal aquatic centre funding
National MP for Northern Victoria Region, and Shadow Sports Minister, Damian Drum, has welcomed “with open arms” a Federal Government commitment to help the Kangaroo Flat Aquatic Centre.
Federal National leader and Regional Development Minister Warren Truss, has confirmed the National Stronger Regions fund would tip $4.885 million into the $31 million project.
Mr Drum as State Sport Minister last year committed the State Government to contributing $15 million to the project.
“The federal funding is the last piece of the jigsaw,” Mr Drum said. “… I hope.”
Mr Drum said that since Labor came to office in Victoria, the $15 million he and the Coalition set aside for the project had been “re-prioritised” into an unspecified part of the Budget.
“Labor’s Budget earlier this year made no mention of the Strategic Sporting Projects we used to fund the aquatic centre project.”
He has repeatedly asked the Andrews Labor Government to show where the funding had been placed and to show it had not just been dumped into general revenue.
“I was repeatedly assured it would be there when needed, and the pressure is now on Victorian Labor to live up to that.
“I really want to congratulate the City of Greater Bendigo which set the aquatic centre as its Number One priority and then stuck to that despite some intense criticism and has now managed to put together a three-tiers of government funding plan,” Mr Drum said.
