First meeting held in Shepparton for the $20 million Regional Jobs and Investment Package
Federal Member for Murray Damian Drum MP today attended the first Regional Jobs and Investment Package (RJIP) Committee meeting in Shepparton. The Goulburn Valley’s Local Planning Committee will develop a Local Investment Plan that outlines the region’s sectors for growth and identifies new markets which could create sustainable jobs in the future.
Mr Drum said “Today marks a major step forward for our region by bringing together the best and brightest within our local community to deliver a plan for our region’s growth now and into the future. Our committee consists of leaders from across regional Victoria with a broad range of skills.
“The Coalition Government knows that Australian cities cannot exist without our regions, which supply cities their water, food, electricity and gas. I’m proud to have delivered $20 million for our region with the Minister for Regional Development; Minister for Local Government and Territories; Minister for Regional Communications Senator the Hon Fiona Nash’s full support.
“Once the Local Investment Plan is completed, the Committee will invite businesses, councils and community groups across the Goulburn Valley region to apply for funding”.
Leading the discussions today was Mr Sam Birrell, CEO, Committee for Greater Shepparton who was appointed the RJIP Committee Chair by Minister Nash and Mr Drum in March along with the following members:
• Anna Speedie
• Julie Aldous
• Judith Cue-Ahmat
• Ben Hardman
• Peter Harriott
• Ken Mclennan
• Dennis O'Brien
• Astrid O'Farrell
• Sarah Parker
• Tony Thompson
“The RJIP Committee represents a diverse group with a range of skills and experience. I am confident this group can come up with a plan for the strategic priorities of the region and that this plan will lead to the allocation of $20 million in the RJIP to areas where it will have the most impact on sustainable employment,” Mr Birrell said.
The RJIP is a $220 million Coalition Government initiative designed to create local jobs and growth, assist in diversifying regional economies and build stronger communities in 10 regions across the country. Funding will be available across three streams: Local Infrastructure Projects, Business Innovation Grants, and Skills and Training.
