IT’S A-BOAT TIME: NEW BOAT FOR SHEPPARTON SEARCH AND RESCUE
The Shepparton Search and Rescue Squad have been using a 23 year-old tinny to undertake rescues and help emergency services on Goulburn Valley waterways for far too long. Thanks to community fundraising and a grant from the Federal Government this tinny has been replaced with a $32,000 state-of-the-art rescue boat.
Federal Member for Murray the Hon Damian Drum MP said the community relies on the Shepparton Search and Rescue Squad to help in times of need and it is important that the squad can have the best equipment on hand.
“It has been a great community effort to raise $32,000 to buy this new boat, with $5,000 being delivered through the Federal Government’s Stronger Community Program. All of the volunteers at the Shepparton Search and Rescue Squad go above and beyond to help our local community and they should have high quality equipment.
“This new boat brings the best possible capabilities to help people during emergency situations on our waterways. There is new technology on board that can create a 3D scan of the riverbed to give rescuers a picture of what lies beneath the water,” Mr Drum said.
Alan Male headed up the Search and Rescue Squad committee to find the best equipment that not only meets guidelines and laws, but can give the best assistance to operators.
“The new boat will give the Squad a lot more capability on the water, a lot more safely. The upgrade has been needed for a number of years and with the introduction of new regulations in 2017 our 23 year old tinny needed to be replaced.
“The new boat has already had its maiden voyage on Sunday 22 April. It was tasked to assist police on the Goulburn River and it performed above and beyond expectations and it will prove itself to be a much needed piece of equipment for the Squad,” Mr Male said.
The Shepparton Triathlon Club was a major contributor to raising funds for the new boat donating $10,000 with the Search and Rescue Squad raising the extra $17,000.
Mr Drum along with the Shepparton Search and Rescue Squad will officially launch the boat at the Shepparton boat ramp at 10am on Monday 30 April.
