Sir Douglas Nicholls to be honoured in electorate renaming
Last week the Australian Electoral Commission confirmed that the current Federal Electorate of Murray will have its boundaries and name changed.
The Federal Member for Murray, the Hon Damian Drum MP said he will continue to be the Federal Member for Murray until the writs are issued for the next federal election where he will then become the candidate for Nicholls.
“It is great to see a Federal Electorate being named after one of our local heroes, who made such a big difference to our nation,” Mr Drum said.
“Sir Doug Nicholls has been described to me as Australia’s very own Martin Luther King, he paved the way for Indigenous Australians in sport, religion, politics and the all-round community,” Mr Drum said.
“Sir Doug was a key figure for the ‘yes’ vote in 1967 referendum to recognise Indigenous Australians as citizens. He and his wife Gladys accomplished many great achievements throughout their lives and they are both very deserving of this recognition.
“The change of the electoral boundaries and the new name for the Murray electorate will affect voters at the next election. Some of the changes are as follows:
• Those who live in the Loddon Shire will become a part of the Mallee electoral division at the next federal election.
• Voters who live in Euroa and Violet Town will vote in the Indi electorate at the next election.
• Voters who live in Seymour, Broadford and surrounding areas will vote in my current seat which will be re-named Nicholls at the next election.
“Everyone who lives in the Campaspe Shire, the City of Greater Shepparton and the Moira Shire will vote in the re-named electorate of Nicholls at the next election,” Mr Drum said.
“It will be business as usual for me and I will continue to work hard representing everyone in the Murray electorate and hopefully everyone in the electorate of Nicholls after the next election,” Mr Drum said.
