A community radio station targeted by arsonists has been given a $4000 boost to assist in the rebuild of its transmission tower as part of the Inland Rail Community Sponsorships and Donations program.

103.9 Seymour FM has been granted the money from the Australian Rail Track Corporation after the not-for-profit community broadcasting station was vandalised in July last year.

Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum, said that while the jobs and stimulus from Inland Rail’s construction in Victoria was still to come, the project had already supported several local groups and organisations in Nicholls.

“The Inland Rail Community Sponsorships and Donations program provides small grants for community initiated projects that contribute to wellbeing, prosperity or sustainability in the regions where Inland Rail will operate,” Mr Drum said.

“Thanks to this $4000 grant from ARTC, Seymour FM will move closer to rebuilding their transmission tower that was tragically destroyed last year.

“It’s a small gesture from our national rail operator that is making a big difference to people in Nicholls.

“Community groups and associations make an enormous contribution to the social connection and wellbeing of our regions. Another round of the program is currently open, and I encourage local groups and schools to familiarise themselves with the guidelines and submit an application.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Michael McCormack, thanked ARTC for investing in the regional communities that will be home to Inland Rail.

“The Federal Government and ARTC are committed to working with local communities to maximise the opportunities that Inland Rail provides,” Mr McCormack said.

“These grants help support organisations and groups whose tireless work brings our communities together.”

ARTC has supported 10 community groups in Nicholls, collectively receiving grants worth more than $30,000. Recipients have included the Broadford and Branjee fire brigades, Lions Club of Seymour, and Avenel Action Group.

The current round of the Inland Rail Community Sponsorships and Donations program is open until April 30. Visit the Inland Rail website to apply.
