Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum, has welcomed today’s announcement by Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Leader of the Nationals, Michael McCormack, that the Federal Government will deliver an additional $250 million into a sixth round of the Building Better Regions Fund in the 2021/22 financial year.
Mr Drum said the Goulburn Valley continued to play an integral role in Australia’s economic recovery from COVID-19, and building better regions was one of the Federal Government’s top priorities.
“Investing in local communities is at the heart of the Federal Government’s plan for regional Australia,” Mr Drum said.
“Our region has already benefited from previous rounds of the BBRF, most recently with funding of more than $8.5 million for the imminent redevelopment of Shepparton’s Maude Street Mall.
“Another local project to benefit from the BBRF was the recently opened Cobram Community Cinema, which received $526,650 funding via round three.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Michael McCormack, said the Federal Government was committed to creating jobs and building stronger regional communities.
“Since 2016, we have funded just on 1000 projects through the BBRF and it is making a difference everywhere,” Mr McCormack said.
“Last year’s Budget committed $200 million for a fifth BBRF round – to address the prolonged impact of bushfires, drought, flood and COVID-19, it incorporated $100 million solely dedicated to tourism-related infrastructure.
“The BBRF supports shovel-ready infrastructure projects, but more than this, it funds events, strategic regional plans, leadership and capacity-building – all delivering new economic and social benefits to our people, Australia-wide.”
