Forty-two volunteer organisations in Nicholls will share in $120,000 as part of the Federal Government’s 2021 Volunteer Grants round.
Ahead of International Volunteer Day on Sunday December 5, Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum, thanked the region’s volunteers for the vital and tireless work they do.
Among the groups in Nicholls to receive funding are the Echuca Moama Search and Rescue Squad, Shepparton Foodshare, Murchison CFA, Avenel Active, Rotary Club of Nathalia, and Tongala Community Charity Op Shop. (Please see below for a full list of recipients.)
“As the local member, I see first-hand the impact of volunteering here in the Goulburn Valley and how the hard work of local volunteers continues to strengthen our communities,” Mr Drum said.
“I’m proud of the work undertaken by these organisations in Nicholls, many of which supported businesses and families throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
“You only have to look at how the community and volunteer groups rallied when Greater Shepparton faced a significant COVID cluster earlier this year to get a gauge on how important the work of these volunteers is.”
The $18 million Volunteer Grants round provided organisations with grants of between $1000 and $5000 to assist with their operations, including the purchase of equipment, training, and background screening checks for volunteers.
“Grants can also be used to reimburse volunteer fuel costs, the transport of volunteers with a disability, or support promotional activities on volunteering opportunities within their organisation,” Mr Drum said.
Mr Drum said almost 9 million volunteers across Australia give their time to support their communities, while more than 5000 organisations were successful this Volunteer Grants round.
“Volunteering plays an important role in Australia’s social landscape, as a proven pathway to get people into jobs, reduce marginalisation and increase community participation, further supporting Australia’s COVID-19 recovery,” Mr Drum said.
