Local journalism in Murray has been given a boost with the announcement that McPherson Media Group and the Numurkah Leader have been awarded grants in the first round of the Federal Government’s Regional and Small Publishers Innovation Fund.
The Innovation Fund is part of the Government’s comprehensive Broadcasting and Content Reform package to strengthen regional and small publishers.
Federal Member for Murray, the Hon Damian Drum MP has welcomed the announcement as a much-needed contribution to the publication of local news in the region
“The McPherson Media Group (MMG) has been granted $242,608 through the fund. MMG is well known throughout regional Victoria where their newspapers are read by thousands of locals every day,’ Mr Drum said.
“The Numurkah Leader continues to be one of the electorates’ strong local papers and will receive $80,000 through the fund, to help innovate.
“MMG and the Numurkah Leader have identified opportunities for innovation and growth, and the Coalition Government is thrilled to support them to increase their capacity to provide relevant and informative public interest journalism to Murray residents,” Mr Drum said
The grant is one of 29 projects, Australia-wide, funded by the Innovation Fund. The total amount funded will be up to $3.6 million.
The Fund is a competitive grants program independently administered by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
Details about successful recipients will be made available on GrantConnect once the grant deeds have been executed.
